ANTHROPOZÄNTA ist ein von Künstler*innen organisiertes Residenz- und Ausstellungsformat zeitgenössischer Kunst, welches sich mit den vielfältigen Erscheinungen, Verbindungen und Konsequenzen nicht-menschlichen und menschlichen Daseins auseinandersetzt. Nach ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2013, findet die ANTHROPOZÄNTA nach zehn Jahren wieder in Nordostoberfranken statt.

Auf der Grundlage der während ihres Aufenthalts durchgeführten Recherchen entwickelten vier junge, internationale Künstler*innen neue Werke, die auf die Region und ihre soziopolitische, wirtschaftliche und ökologische Geschichte reagieren.

Die Ausstellung lädt die Anwohner*innen ein, ihr Zuhause aus einer anderen, möglicherweise neuen oder ungewohnten Perspektive zu betrachten. Dabei versteht sich ANTHROPOZÄNTA als offenes Format, welches Diskurs, Begegnung und Gemeinschaft fördern möchte. Zwei Monate lang wird ein leerstehender Geschäftsraum mitten im Stadtzentrum, in dem früher ein Reisebüro untergebracht war, zur zentralen Anlaufstelle für Begegnungen, Diskussionen und Austausch, die kostenlos und für die breite Öffentlichkeit zugänglich sind.

Die ANTHROPOZÄNTA 2023 wird von den Künstler*innen Sophie Innmann und Daniel Vollmond organisiert, die beide in der Region aufgewachsen sind.

Francis Almendarez‘ Arbeit verweist anhand von Denim-Jeans sowohl auf menschliche Körper als auch auf topografische 3D-Karten von Gebirgslandschaften, indem sie Parallelen und Verbindungen zwischen Körper als Territorium und Territorium als Land zieht. Blue Jeans als Assoziation mit US-amerikanischer Kultur und der Arbeiterklasse werden als Subjekt und Material mit historischer und zeitgenössischer Produktion von Baumwolle und Indigo in Verbindung gesetzt. Darüber hinaus wirft ihr Status und die Privilegien, die sie als Waren genießen, wenn sie sich global frei bewegen und zirkulieren dürfen, die Frage auf, wie Werte verteilt werden und wem oder was das Recht nach uneingeschränkter Mobilität zusteht.

Shabnam Chamanis‘ künstlerische Praxis bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen darstellender und bildender Kunst. Ihr künstlerisches Denken hinterfragt aus feministischer Perspektive Konzepte und Zusammenhänge von Zugehörigkeit und Klasse, Kommunikation und Sehgewohnheiten. Gerne entwickelt sie Arbeiten in kollaborativen, prozessorientierten und transdisziplinären Kontexten. In Hof begibt sich Chamani anhand einer alten Fotografie auf Spurensuche ihrer iranischen Familiengeschichte in Westeuropa, welche in den 80er Jahren in einer Unterkunft für Schutzsuchende in Hof begann.

Michael Dignam untersucht Formen des Zusammenlebens, von Arbeit und Klassenstrukturen in der Gesellschaft. Er stellt Verbindungen zwischen dem Neuen und dem Alten her und spielt dabei mit Aspekten von Zeit, Rhythmus und Wiederholung. Ausgehend von den physischen Überresten des Eisernen Vorhangs im Dorf Mödlareuth, hinterfragt er in seiner Recherche für ANTHROPOZÄNTA 2023 Orte und Grenzen, die heute bestehen.

Sanna Reitz führt in ihren Arbeiten die Absurdität menschlicher Bemühungen vor Augen, Natur zu kontrollieren, abzubilden, zu formen und zu produzieren. Sie dekonstruiert romantisierte und idealisierte Vorstellungen von natürlicher Idylle und Heimat. Für die ANTHROPOZÄNTA 2023 entwickelte sie ausgehend von Beobachtungen zu urbaner Wildnis und kultivierter Landschaft in der Region zwei Arbeiten, welche die örtlichen (Kultur-)Landschaften, tierische sowie gleichermaßen menschliche Habitate und Verhaltensweisen miteinander verweben.

ANTHROPOZÄNTA is an artist-run residency and exhibition format for contemporary art that showcases the manifold appearances, connections and consequences of both human and non-human existence. Since its inception in 2013, ANTHROPOZÄNTA will take place again, ten years later, in Northeast Upper Franconia.

Based on the research conducted during their residency, four young, international artists developed new works that respond to the region and its socio-political, economic, and environmental histories.

The exhibition invites local residents to view their home from a different, possibly new or unfamiliar, perspective. As an open format, ANTHROPOZÄNTA aims to promote discourse, encounters, and community. For two months, an empty commercial space in the middle of the city centre, formerly occupied by a travel agency office, will become the central contact point for meetings, discussions, and exchanges that are free and open to the general public.

ANTHROPOZÄNTA 2023 is organized by the artists Sophie Innmann and Daniel Vollmond, who both grew up in the area.

Francis Almendarez‘s work uses denim jeans to reference both human bodies and 3D topographical maps of mountainous terrains, drawing parallels and connections between body as territory and territory as land. Through their associations with Americana and the working-class, denim jeans as subject and material, are relinked to historical and contemporary productions of cotton and indigo. Moreover, as evidenced through their global movement and circulation, their status and privilege as commodities bring into question how value and the right to mobility are assigned.

Shabnam Chamanis‘ artistic practice operates at the intersection of performing and visual arts. Her artistic thinking questions, from a feminist perspective, concepts and contexts of belonging, class, communication, and habits of seeing. She enjoys developing work in collaborative, process-oriented, and transdisciplinary contexts. In Hof, Chamani uses an old photograph to search for traces of her Iranian family history in Western Europe, going back to a local shelter for refugees in Hof during the 1980s.

Michael Dignam investigates forms of living, labour, and class-structures within society. He draws links between the new and the old while playing with aspects of time, rhythm, and repetition. Using the physical remnants of the Iron Curtain in the neighbouring village of Mödlareuth as a starting point, his research for ANTHROPOZÄNTA 2023 questions place and the boundaries that exist today.

Sanna Reitz demonstrates the absurdity of human efforts to control, depict, shape, and produce nature. She deconstructs romanticized and idealized notions of both natural idyll and home. Based on observations made during the residency of urban wilderness and cultivated landscapes in the region, she developed two works that interweave the local cultural landscapes with the habitats and behaviours of humans and animals alike.
